The History of Love: A Novel by Nicole Krauss
The History of Love is about Leo Gursky, an old man living alone in New York and his manuscript that survived the Holocaust. Leo escaped his native Poland as a WWII refugee and is afraid of dying without anyone noticing. Krauss wrote this story based onLeo's storyand hisfear of dying without anyone noticing. The History of Love introduces a 15 year old girl named Alma, an name shared with Mr. Gursky's first love. I found the book to be very well written and yet a bit confusing. The point of view switches frequently with the introduction of new characters. However, the characters are well developed and I recommend this book for anyone in the mood to sit and read a good novel.
Stephanie, 9th Grade - PALY
The Year My Sister Got Lucky by Aimee Friedman
The Year My Sister Got Lucky is about two city girls who move to a small town in the countryside. Silverfin: A James Bond Adventure is the first in a series of books written by Charlie Higson about the young James Bond before he became the famous spy.
We first meet James as he was beginning his studies at a prestigious school in England, where he copes with bullying and cheating during a sports competition. During a school break, James visits his aunt and uncle in Scotland and his natural spy instincts take hold when he gets interested in a missing person case that happens to have connections to the school bully. The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
(In the manner of Lemony Snicket): This is another end-of-summer inspirational book about the traumas of bratty teenage girls....wait, no it's not. If you don't enjoy books about a convocation of murderers, orphaned boys, polished, razor-sharp knives, graveyards, ghouls, or Neil Gaiman's lovely dark humor, then I suggest you find another sort of amusement, such as reading an inspirational book about the traumas of bratty teenage girls or buying a human hand from a Chinese peddler in the desert. However, if you are interested in such things, then stay and read. The Graveyard Book is a chilling tale about Bod (short for Nobody) Owens, who has lived in a graveyard since he was a toddler. He is taught everything he needs to know about life by the (dead) inhabitants of the graveyard, and lives a content life until the day he is forced to confront the man who murdered his parents......
Cheers,
Evelyn, 8th Grade - Jordan
MirrorMask by Neil Gaiman and Dave McKe
